BIO

Stan Awtrey is the Chief Operating Officer and Communications Director of Awtrey Media Group, where he helps businesses shape their voice and sharpen the way they communicate. He brings decades of experience as a Pulitzer Prize–nominated and award-winning journalist to guide organizations in building clear, effective messaging that connects with diverse audiences.

Stan spent more than 40 years as a writer for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, covering championship teams, major events, and the athletes who defined them. He joined the paper at age 21 and became a fixture on the Atlanta media scene, spending 30 years on staff and continuing to contribute content on a regular basis. He was part of the team nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2002 and has earned multiple awards for his reporting. A longtime member of the Golf Writers Association of America, he has covered the Masters, U.S. Open, PGA Championship and many of golf’s premier events, with his work published in magazines and outlets throughout the United States and around the world.

In addition to his journalism career, Stan is a published author of Harmon Wages: The Butcher’s Boy and The 50-Year History of the Georgia PGA. His experience also extends beyond print: he has been interviewed by radio and television stations, hosted a cable television show, done voice work, and created email campaigns that achieved outstanding open rates. Since 1995, he has also served as Executive Director of the Georgia Sports Writers Association, mentoring and supporting colleagues across the industry.

Today, Stan uses that background at Awtrey Media Group to help companies bring clarity and impact to their marketing. Whether it’s refining brand messaging, building campaigns, or shaping long-term communications strategy, he ensures every word and story supports measurable results.

Away from work, Stan has been married to his college sweetheart for 46 years and has two children who he gets to work with daily through Awtrey Media Group.

Career Highlights

I’ve built my career around getting things done, the right way and on time. For more than four decades at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, I covered championship teams, mentored colleagues and had the privilege of telling stories that mattered. One unforgettable moment was spending half an hour with Arnold Palmer in his office at Bay Hill (there are worse ways to spend a morning).

Beyond the newsroom, I’ve helped companies and events shape their message, from guiding financial services firms to driving unprecedented coverage at the U.S. Amateur and the Dogwood Invitational. No matter the setting, I focus on creating communications that connect with people and deliver real results. Today at Awtrey Media Group, I put that same experience to work helping businesses sharpen their voice and strengthen their strategy.
